Axon regeneration and degeneration

The HammarLab aims to understand how neurons and circuits maintain normal function over time. To this end, they study the cell biology of axon degeneration and regeneration. They also investigate the determinants of neuronal identity, which control the properties and connectivity of each neuron type.

Biography

At the University of Utah, Marc Hammarlund did his doctoral work with Erik Jorgensen, studying genetics and synaptic transmission. In his postdoc with Mike Bastiani, he pioneered the study of axon regeneration in C. elegans and discovered the DLK regeneration pathway.. Hammarlund is now a Professor with joint appointments in Yale's Departments of Neuroscience and Genetics. Before graduate school, he worked on Capitol Hill as a legislative aide.
